Great to see the rebuild getting traction.A well designed pump track and jump lines to suit all skill levels is what is needed here.Surface needs to be durable and well drained to reduce maintenance and enable use all year round.

I was actually excited when I originally read this, I was apart of building the original Croydon Hills trails 15 years ago and also worked on the more recent jumps at this location. However, seeing that you wont be building anything above 1 metre I don't see the point of this really. You already tried to build a pump track in Heathmont which you never maintained and is now just an eyesore. I've worked in the BMX industry for the past 20 years and from that experience I can't see anything like this staying maintained. However when there are bigger jumps are involved you will find the older riders are a lot more inclined to spend their own time and money to keep something like this maintained but in the past it's fallen on deaf ears when it comes to dealing with the councils. I don't see why you couldn't have a variety of jumps for everyone.

Yes to different surfaces, not just gravel.  Ample water refill stations would be great, as well as all-in-one tables with bench seats. Taller trees to provide shade along the trail please.

This is definitely a great idea, jumps are a great activity for weekends.Another jump park I enjoy riding at is the Wonga park BMX track, which features three different lines of tabletop jumps. However, the jumps are very close together, and you need to brake in between the jumps, instead of flowing through easily. For this new track, I would recommend being wary of this issue. Either make the jumps bigger or space them out more. Personally, the bigger the better.

Also, I would say have a huge jump section with bigger jumps for more experienced riders, so that this facility can be entertaining for everyone, not just beginners.

Maybe there should be a zoned off section where people can enjoy a few billies, it was all the rage a little while ago, and unfortunately over time these people have been moved on.Just a thought, hopefully we can be inclusive.

Here’s a fabulous example of what not to do, https://youtu.be/j9BZaZtMEAA . It would be wonderful to incorporate a very separate smaller kids area, in addition to the big kids area. Can’t wait to see the end result!

I'm a local in croydon hills and have been ever since the council made these jumps legal. We used to work along side a man named Pete who used to work for maroondah council, at the time we were only kids but he understood what we wanted and obviously new the limits of jump heights etc, he would organise deliverys of dirt if we needed it and we kept them pristine, at one point we probably had atleast 20 usable jumps. Every single one was over 1m high. I completely understand that there should be a small intermediate/beginner track but 300-400mm high is sort of laughable, people would trip over those. If your planning on doing tabletops I think this track should resemble exactly what dandenong skatepark have added to theirs. Different sized concrete tabletops. Ranging from beginner-advanced atleast. If that's not achievable then atleast take truckloads of dirt down there and let us build jumps without destroying them and taking the dirt away. I'm the 20 years I've been down there not once have I seen someone go away in an ambulance, and after all the sign says it all, *use at own risk - wear correct padding - children accompanied by an adult etc. I and many others really hope this isn't going to be a waste of time and our money Lastly please consider letting the jump be higher than 1m and atleast a line of double jumps with hips etc, otherwise the kids will continue to build jumps in the trees and source other places out of maroondah worth their time Thanks

I and many others really hope this isn't going to be a waste of time and our money Lastly please consider letting the jump be higher than 1m and atleast a line of double jumps with hips etc, otherwise the kids will continue to build jumps in the trees and source other places out of maroondah worth their time Thanks  link

"We would love to see money put into the great BMX track that already exists in Maroondah on Colchester Rd.  It is a well used facility which is currently run and financially supported by volunteers.  The facility/club - ‘Maroondah BMX Club’ could do with any help they can get financially and or just general maintenance up keep from council. A visit to the facility will illustrate how well used it is and how much can be done with a little support. "

"Agree on the toilets comment, if the money is there.Agree on getting a trails professional as well if money permits. On the trails side, I’d say a quality pump track catering for intermediate would be appreciated so adults and older children can enjoy is all you need. If your not going to put back advanced jumps. An all ability pump track is the best bang for $$ and value to encourage the most riders out, for the area.  "

Fantastic to see the council supporting facilities to encourage outdoor and bike-specific activities. I would encourage council to engage an experienced contractor to undertake the design and build, rather than using someone in house. Quarry Park bike park in Maribyrnong is a good example of what can be achieved although it is a larger area. Mt Evelyn pump track is a good example of a beginner pump track using a small space. Lillydale Lake mtb trails are a good example of trails designed for mountain bikes with a variety of features. Shire of Yarra Ranges are really putting Maroondah to shame when it comes to facilities for bike users. Thanks MCC for looking for opportunities to change this.

Great idea, as a past resident of Latrobe court and with my kids going to Croydon Hills Primary, this will bring our family back to enjoy the Yarrunga area once again.

Thanks for progressing this MCC. If you are not already aware, Yarra Ranges have engaged a team of professional trail builders to roll out their cycling strategy. The team were used to build the mountain bike skills trail at Lilydale Lake. it would be really worth speaking with your colleagues at YR as they have done the hard years, no point reinventing the wheel. To do anything decent, it will be a challenge given the size of the land allocated but I wish you all the best and look forward to using it when complete.

The jumps that previously existed have been a great source of enjoyment for kids in the area for 20 odd years, so it was sad that they were removed.  Its fantastic that council is going to reinstate a professional version for kids to further enjoy.  Any recreational area that encourages kids to be out riding bikes and having fun is brilliant.

Pioneer Park in Bright (Alpine Shire Vic) is a great example of jumps lines catering for beginners through to advanced riders, and Cockatoo pump track (Cardinia Shire Vic) is a great example of an asphalted pump track that ride, and last far longer that dirt ones like that at Heatherdale (Whitehorse Council Vic). Please don’t skimp on the design and construction details. A great design and quality constructed set of jumps and pump track will ensure the ongoing use by all skill levels for years to come!

Great step forward, I know your sick of kids making jumps in revegetation areas, the thing to consider is that these are kids looking for more advanced features. If you have table tops, there should definitely be an advanced line that would be the size of hill n dale at minimum, having it range from beginner to advanced attracts more people and advances skill ranges much faster. The 1m rule limits this and that's when you get kids building close to areas the council doesn't approve of. There are lots of under 10s that are at an advanced level already and the older crowd have always been the ones maintaing Croydon hills. There have been jumps here for over 25 years.

i completely agree with this, the design is great for beginner riders however once their skills quickly outgrow the facilities they’ll want to push themselves more, having bigger jumps will allow kids to have something to work up to having different lines that accommodate different skill levels will avoid the problem of kids riding outside of their skill level and getting hurt
